MANTECA, Calif. — The driver of a street sweeper died Monday morning after crashing into the back of a tractor-trailer in Manteca.

According to the California Highway Patrol, it happened around 8:30 a.m. on the southbound Highway 99 offramp to Lathrop Road.

CHP says a man was driving a street sweeper south in the #5 lane at around 35-40 mph while a tractor-trailer was stopped on the right shoulder of the offramp outside traffic lanes.

For an unknown reason, the driver of the street sweeper left the road onto the shoulder and hit the tractor-trailer's rear.

The CHP says the driver of the street sweeper was unrestrained and taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be factors in the crash. Anyone with information can call CHP Stockton at 209-938-4800.

The CHP says the street sweeper involved belonged to a private company not Caltrans.
